2022 Jeep Wrangler Guide

2022 Jeep Wrangler Guide

When it comes to serious off-roading, the Jeep Wrangler is the king of the jungle. In this 2022 Jeep Wrangler guide, we will be discussing the evolution of the Wrangler from the beginning to the latest 2022 model, its ride quality, its weak and strong points, and how it beats the competition in the segment.

Bottom Line: In my opinion, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler still remains the most thrilling and hardcore 4×4 off-road SUV money can buy.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Overview

The Jeep Wrangler is America’s favorite SUV when it comes to off-roading and adventure. It is also one of the most iconic vehicles in the world. Originally built in 1941 for the U.S army, it now serves as a recreational vehicle for people who love to spend time outdoors.

From 1941 to 2018, the Jeep Wrangler evolved through 4 generations, and the current 2022 model is based on the latest design update which happened in 2018.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler retains its rugged image with removable top and doors, countless customization options, and unforgiving power.

The 2022 Wrangler is now available with a range of powertrain options, which means if you are looking for power, fuel economy, or a mix of the two, you will find one that satisfies your needs.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Engine Specs

2022 Jeep Wrangler Engine Specs

Though an optional 6-speed manual transmission is available with a few engine configurations, some are only available with an 8-speed automatic.

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid is one of the best-selling plug-ins in the market which was added last year to the Wrangler lineup.

For drivers demanding unnecessary power, Jeep offers the Wrangler 392 Rubicon with its muscular 6.4-liter V8. Throughout the range, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler’s towing capacity is fixed, rated at 3500 pounds.

I like that Jeep has offered a range of engine options with the 2022 Wrangler; though I would stick with the V8, the wide engine choice gives me a sense of satisfaction in buying the one that fulfills my requirements.

The same is the case with any other regular buyer, who can pick the powertrain he thinks will suit him the best.

Let us have a look at the engine configurations available with the 2022 Jeep Wrangler.

1. Engine: 6.4-liter Hemi V8

  • Acceleration (0 to 60 mph): 4.2 seconds
  • Fuel economy (highway/city): 17/13 mpg
  • Torque/Horsepower: 470 lb-ft/470 hp

2. Engine: 2.0-liter inline-four turbo plug-in Hybrid

  • Acceleration (0 to 60 mph): 6.8 seconds
  • Fuel economy (highway/city): 49 mpg-e (elec+gas), 20 mpg (gas)
  • Torque/Horsepower: 470 lb-ft/ 375 hp

3. Engine: 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel

  • Acceleration (0 to 60 mph): 7.5 seconds
  • Fuel economy (highway/city): 26-29/21-22 mpg
  • Torque/Horsepower: 422 lb-ft/260 hp

4. Engine: 2.0-liter inline-four turbo

  • Acceleration (0 to 60 mph): 8 seconds
  • Fuel economy (highway/city): 24/21-22 mpg
  • Torque/Horsepower: 295 lb-ft/ 270 hp

5. Engine: 3.6-liter V6

  • Acceleration (0 to 60 mph): 6.9 seconds
  • Fuel economy (highway/city): 23-25/17-20 mpg
  • Torque/Horsepower: 260 lb-ft/285 hp

The 6.4-liter Hemi V8 makes you feel all the roar and torque as soon as you hit the pedal, which is why it is my favorite in the powertrain lineup (it’s an overkill, I like overkill).

If the V8 is too much for you, well then you can go with the 3.0-liter turbo-diesel which provides ample torque numbers, or with the 2.0-liter turbo hybrid variant which offers great fuel economy. If you do not want to go with a turbo, then the 3.6-liter V6 is the ultimate option.

The Sunrider hardtop is available as an option.

11. 2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon 392– MSRP Starting at $79,990

2022 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon 392

The Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon 392 is the legendary Jeep everyone wants to have. The Rubicon 392 is a beast designed to conquer the most challenging terrains Earth throws at it. If the Rubicon 392 cannot get you there, you will probably be needing a boat or a helicopter.

With a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 producing 470 pound-feet of torque and 470 horsepower, the Wrangler Rubicon 392 harnesses an overload of power and ability.

It also features a performance steering wheel with paddles shifters, a heavy-duty 8-speed automatic transmission, black leather-trimmed seats with embroidered 392 logos, a hydro glide air induction system, 17-inch bronze bead-lock capable rims, a dual-exhaust system with exhaust sound enhancement feature.

The Xtreme Recon Package which equips the Rubicon 392 with beefy 35-inch tires, Sunrider hardtop, and half doors are available as an optional upgrade.

The 3.73 rear axle ratio and 2-inch FOX aluminum shocks enhance and deliver optimum performance not only off-road but on the road as well.

Besides these regular trims, Wrangler has also introduced its 4xe lineup which is available on three trims.

The Wrangler 4xe combines fuel efficiency by adding an electric motor that allows you to run the vehicle on pure-electric, hybrid, and eSave mode (which preserves the battery for later use and runs the vehicle on gas).

The Wrangler 4xe has a combined fuel economy of 49 mpge as claimed by the manufacturer and a driving range of 370 miles on a full tank of gas. Let us also have a look at those.

12. 2022 Jeep Wrangler Sahara 4xe – MSRP Starting at $54,595

The Wrangler Sahara 4xe is the cheapest in the 4xe lineup featuring 20-inch wheels, lagoon blue tow hooks, body-colored fender flares, leather-trimmed seats, LED lighting package, keyless entry, 3 electric driving modes, LED battery monitor, Selec-Trac full-time 4×4 system, Alpine premium audio system, and Uconnect 4C NAV. The Sunrider hardtop is available as an option.

12. 2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe – MSRP Starting at $58,790

Next up in the hybrid lineup is the Wrangler Rubicon 4xe, which focuses on hardcore off-roading without compromising on fuel average.

It comes with a full-time transfer case, hood decals, surf blue tow hooks, keyless entry, 33-inch all-terrain tires, 3 electric driving modes, Rock-Trac full-time 4×4 system, surf blue interior stitching, LED battery monitor, Alpine premium audio system, and Uconnect 4C NAV.

Gorilla glass windshield, Sunrider hardtop, and half doors can be bought as options.

13. 2022 Jeep Wrangler High Altitude 4xe – MSRP Starting at $60,170

Fitted with the most creature comforts in the 4xe lineup, the Wrangler High Altitude comes with new 20-inch wheels, lagoon blue tow hooks, body-colored fender flares, keyless entry, 3 electric driving modes, LED lighting package, Selec-Trac 4×4 system, Alpine premium audio system, LED battery monitor, exterior mirrors with integrated turn signals, and Uconnect 4C NAV. Besides many other options, the Sunrider hardtop is also available with this trim.

That is one big 2022 Wrangler lineup. So which one would I buy? Well, definitely the Rubicon 392, or the Rubicon, or the 4xe. Why? Because for me, the Wrangler is all about extreme 4×4 performance.

I would only like to drive my Wrangler when I’m heading for a road trip on a challenging path. And that is the only reason why I would use a Wrangler because there are better options to consider for daily driving. For me, the Wrangler is only for extreme off-roading.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Interior

2022 Jeep Wrangler Interior

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler is still based on the previous 2018 model, which means interior space and controls are about the same. Square windows and slender pillars allow great visibility and reduce blind spots.

Off-roading is made easy by the numerous controls laid out on the dash in a refreshingly intuitive manner. The seat is high and upright, and with the seat and steering adjustment, the driver has the freedom to configure the seating position to his requirements.

The new soft top design now makes it removing much more friendly than on previous models.

Regarding interior space, the Wrangler lags behind the competition. It does offer slightly longer legroom, but the cargo space still trails behind.

In comparison, the 2022 Land Rover Defender 110 offers 39.1 inches of both rear and front legroom, and the 2022 Ford Bronco provides 36.3 inches and 43.1 inches of rear and front legroom respectively, whereas the 2022 Jeep Wrangler has 38.3 inches of rear legroom and 41.2 inches of front legroom.

The cargo space with the rear bench folded and upright is as follows; the 2022 Land Rover Defender 110 has the largest cargo space when the rear bench is folded at 78.8 cubic feet. With the seats upright, the space cuts down to 34 cubic feet.

Similarly, the 2022 Ford Bronco offers the largest cargo space here with the rear bench upright at 35.6 cubic feet and 77.6 cubic feet when folded. The 2022 Jeep Wrangler comes in last with 31.7 cubic feet of space with the rear bench upright and 72.4 cubic feet when folded.

The Jeep Wrangler lacks the latest technology currently available in the market such as lane-assist and automatic emergency braking, but that is because it is designed with a specific purpose in mind, and to deliver that purpose perfectly, it compromises on many things.

Still, it does offer quite many infotainment options; base trim comes equipped with a 5-inch touchscreen, whereas as you pay more up the lineup, you can get a 7-inch touch display with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay or the top-of-the-line 8.4-inch infotainment screen with integrated navigation.

A front-facing camera is also included with the larger touchscreen for the best visibility during off-roading. For music lovers, an Alpine premium audio system is also available, whereas the 8-speaker audio system is standard.

I am not a fan of the Wrangler’s interior. It feels too basic, but it is made to serve a purpose. With the doors, roof, and windshield down, you know you must have a rugged interior to survive out in the wild, and the Wrangler does that perfectly.

Whatever options the Wrangler offers, for me they are enough given the outdoor freedom it offers.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Safety Features

2022 Jeep Wrangler Safety Features

As mentioned above, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler does great job off-roading. However, it lacks to keep up with other important aspects.

As a serious off-roader, the Wrangler must be ready to handle any unforeseen mishaps which may happen during the journey; the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has awarded the Wrangler a 3-star in rollover test and 4-star in front-impact crash test.

Similarly, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has also awarded the Wrangler Marginal and Poor safety ratings.

Moreover, driver-assist features too are scarce in the 2022 Jeep Wrangler; you need to pay extra as Jeep does not provide any as standard. It is disappointing to see that the base model does not even have air-conditioning.

However, you can get automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring as options. Modern technology such as autonomous driving is still not available on the Jeep Wrangler.

The latest Wrangler may be the best mid-sized SUV for adventures and off-roading, but it is not the preferred one when considering driver comfort. It offers a few relaxing features and creature comforts but other models in the segment deliver it much better.

The climate control system is effective with rear air vents, the rear seat row is firm and flat but allows minor adjustment, and the front seats provide better comfort among the seating arrangement on long trips. Overall, Jeep does not prioritize passenger comfort on the Wrangler.

And that is one of the many reasons why I would not like to use the Jeep Wrangler as a daily driver.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Performance and Ride Quality

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler appeals to customers with its range of trim lineup, particularly with the 4xe. The Rubicon 392 with its 6.4-liter Hemi V8, lockable differentials, optional 35-inch tires, and other godly upgrades make it a ruthless monster over any given terrain, which is why it is number one.

But with so much off-road capability, upgrades, and solid body-on-frame built, the Wrangler compromises on ride quality.

The long brake pedal travel, solid-axle suspension, and sluggish steering make the Wrangler ideal for off-roading but not for daily driving. Similarly, the large tires and boxy cabin design which befits the idea of mud-crawling, cause the vehicle to suffer from road and wind noise.

Although the current model provides better soundproofing than previous models, the noise is still noticeable, significantly on the soft top.

In terms of performance, the Rubicon 392 does zero to 60 mph in a staggering 4.2 seconds, which is near supercar performance. As soon as you press the pedal, 470 horses come at your command to deliver the heart-pounding power.

But this thrill will cost you a fuel economy of 13 mpg in the city and 17 on the highway. On the other hand, the 3.6-liter V6 coupled with the 8-speed automatic provides a balance of power and fuel economy; with a fuel average of 19 mpg in the city and around 24 mpg on the highway.

A 3.0-liter turbo diesel V6 is also available which pumps 422 pound-feet of torque to satisfy people’s needs without spending a fortune.

For basic 4×4 needs, a 2.0-liter turbo inline-four is available which provides decent power with a good fuel economy. The 4xe, which features the same engine coupled with an electric motor, almost doubles its power potential and fuel economy thanks to its hybrid technology.

The reason why I love the Jeep Wrangler is that it boasts a wild and adventurous personality, which is great for outdoor fun. The Wrangler compromises on ride quality, but that is not what we are looking for here.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Xtreme Recon Package

2022 Jeep Wrangler Xtreme Recon Package

Debuted in 2021 for the 2022 Jeep Wrangler, the Xtreme Recon Package upgrades the already viscous Wrangler for extreme 4×4 adventures.

This package adds 35-inch tires, which changes the overall capability of the vehicle, and to cater to the changes these tires bring, this package also takes care of the necessary tuning and extra equipment.

The suspension gets lifted by 1.5 inches to make space for the beefier tires, similarly, the shocks are also tuned to handle them appropriately.

The large diameter of the tires means more weight and increased speed given the same rpm, therefore the axle ratio is reduced to 4.56:1 (the standard Wrangler 392 gets 3.73:1) and the swing gate is further reinforced.

Ground clearance gets pumped to 12.9 inches, which in turn also increases the departure, approach, and break-over angles significantly. The departure, approach, and break-over angles now stand at 40.4, 47.4, and 26.7 degrees respectively.

The increase in ground clearance also elevates the water fording ability of the 2022 Jeep Wrangler, pushing it to 33.9 inches, which is quite more than you would dare to try.

I would not mind getting the Xtreme Recon Package on my Wrangler Rubicon or Wrangler Rubicon 392 considering the edge this package allows with the increased ground clearance and boosted off-road capability. I must confess, I must get this package, (I like overkill). For me, it is a need.

The Xtreme Recon Package besides doubling practicality, gives a killer look to your Wrangler as well. In my opinion, it is a must-buy for 4×4 enthusiasts.

Competition

The Jeep Wrangler offers a range of powertrain and transmission options, with countless customizable add-ons, however, it compromises driver safety and ride comfort. And if it is road manners you are looking for, then there are other models you can consider instead of the Jeep Wrangler. Let us have a look at our options.

2022 Toyota 4Runner

2022 Toyota 4Runner

The 2022 4Runner is Toyota’s take on off-roading. The 2022 Toyota 4Runner is powered by an exclusive 4-liter V6 coupled with a 5-speed automatic gearbox that pumps 278 pound-feet of torque and 270 horsepower.

On the other hand, the Jeep Wrangler with its 8-speed automatic gearbox delivers a much more smooth power delivery along the highway.

But the 4Runner has a better tow rating than the Jeep Wrangler; where the Wrangler can only tow a maximum of 3500 pounds, the 4Runner offers 5000 pounds of hauling power.

In terms of powertrain options, the Wrangler beats the 4Runner, with its many combinations. The 4Runner only offers one standard powertrain, but as a Toyota, it maintains its reputation of being one of the most durable and reliable ones in the world.

The Toyota 4Runner does not offer a foldable windshield, or removable doors and top, but it does provide better safety and driver comfort when compared to the Jeep Wrangler.

Where the Wrangler allows you to enjoy the fresh air with the removable panels, the 4Runner provides a quiet cabin while cruising on the highway.

Similarly, the 4Runner comes with a better interior and greater practicality; with a cargo space of 47.2 cubic feet behind the second row and 89.7 cubic feet of space with the second row folded.

Concerning extreme off-roading, the Wrangler Rubicon 392 beats the 4Runner TRD Pro with its massive factory-fitted upgrades, especially with the Xtreme Recon Package with adds another 1.9-inches of elevation, significantly improving the departure, approach, and break-over angles.

Worry not, for the 4Runner can do the same sport but with after-market upgrades. However, the 4Runner can never match the brute power which comes with the Wrangler’s 6.4-liter Hemi V8 with its 4-liter naturally aspirated V6.

Overall, it’s a matter of give and take. The Jeep Wrangler may be tiring on long trips due to its cabin noise and unrefined driving manners, but it nails off-roading with its exceptional capability. The 4Runner on the other hand is more comfortable to drive and offers a much better safety rating.

2022 Ford Bronco

2022 Ford Bronco

The 2022 Ford Bronco competes with the Jeep Wrangler with its removable top and doors, but it lacks a foldable windshield. Still, the Ford Bronco allows Ford customers to experience Wrangler-like off-roading adventures without needing to switch to the Jeep brand.

The 2022 Ford Bronco features aggressive looks, muscular built quality, and competitive off-road capability; its 7-speed low-gear manual gearbox, locking differentials and 37-inch bead-lock tires are some of the few traits that make it a great off-roader.

Moreover, it beats the Jeep Wrangler in road manners and interior space but carries a louder cabin noise.

For maximum power, the Ford Bronco Raptor is available which comes with a powerful 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 producing 440 pound-feet of torque and 418 horsepower. The Bronco Raptor has been tuned to confidently perform on punishing terrains where your average SUV is bound to die.

The 37-inch all-terrain tires increase the height and width by 3 and 9 inches respectively, which consequently increases the ground clearance to 13.1 inches, which in turn significantly improves the approach, break-over, and departure angles.

The exterior also gets upgrades such as skid plates and wider fender flares to cater to the increase in tire width. While the remaining Bronco trims have a towing capacity of 3500 pounds, the Raptor trims get tuned to haul 4500 pounds.

About driver safety, the 2022 Ford Bronco features standard automatic high beams, emergency braking, and hill-start assist. Optional features include lane-keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert, evasive steering assist, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control.

Overall, the Ford Bronco is a great a worthy competitor to the Jeep Wrangler, however, it still needs to integrate more ruggedness and off-roading capability to beat the Wrangler.

FAQs

Let us check out some of the most common questions people ask regarding the 2022 Jeep Wrangler.

Question: How many Miles do Jeep Wranglers Last?

Answer: Jeep provides 36,000 miles or 3 years (whichever comes first) warranty. However, the average Jeep survives easily up to 300,000 miles, but with timely maintenance and decent driving habit, the Jeep Wrangler is capable of lasting a lifetime due to its overdesigned ruggedness.

Final Verdict

In my opinion, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler excels in providing off-roading capability but with compromising comfort and driver ergonomics which are available on other SUVs.

But that is a necessary compromise; you cannot expect the Wrangler to provide a plush ride while taking on rocky and muddy terrains without a sweat. The Wrangler is designed to be this way. With an experienced driver, the Wrangler will crawl over any given terrain.

On the other hand, the 4Runner and Bronco are also great off-road SUVs, but they offer other perks which the Wrangler lacks. These are better suited to drivers who besides 4×4 capability, also need a comfortable ride for long highway routes.

If you are looking for extreme canyon tours and adventures across challenging terrains, then the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and Rubicon 392 are the best options on the market.

These may not be as comfortable as others, but they are brute in power and ability. For a balance between on-road comfort and off-road capability, the Ford Bronco is the better option.

And for a more, comfort-focused off-road SUV, the 4Runner is the best option. We hope this guide helped you in getting to know the 2022 Jeep Wrangler in detail. Cheers!
